Dear
Editors,
We are appalled by the way magazines like yours objectify, falsely
represent, and condescend to young women. You
run a token article promoting self-esteem, and then completely contradict it
with the other articles and images in your magazine.
If you truly cared about young women, their self-esteem, their potential
and their overall well being, you would not perpetuate the idea that a girl’s
worth is measured by her looks and her ability to attract the opposite sex.
We realize that most of your magazine’s revenue comes from advertisers
that promote that idea. However,
your readers annually spend millions of dollars on other products that you could
easily advertise instead. Even if
you were forced to raise the cover price of your magazine to make up for losses
in advertising revenue, young women would still purchase you publication because
magazines like yours are one of the only sources of mass culture available to
them. You may even gain readers by
proving that you take young women seriously.
Without the pressure to create a favorable environment for purely
fashion-based ads, you would be free to feature serious articles on real female
role models whose professions are not appearance-based.
You would be free to reflect the reality that clothes and makeup are not
the center of every girl’s life. We
realize that girls enjoy adorning themselves with fashionable clothes and
makeup. However, they should not be
told that they must do so in order to look good or feel feminine.
If you cared about young women, you would publish this letter.

are interested in your response to this concern. You can reach us at:
